Production: Reshoot
After several tutorials and rough to fine cuts, we decided that we needed to reshoot 2 scenes due to their being too much of the actors backs in the shots and not enough of their faces. Stories are told through faces, therefore its very important that we see these the most.
I arranged for the reshoot to happen on Monday 30th April and we had secured all of the equipment and actors for this day. I created a schedule and risk assessment ready to get everything shot that was needed. We were confident in knowing what we wanted to shoot and when because we had completed a test shoot for our reshoot in order to save valuable time on set. After checking our budget and deciding we had enough to have all the cast needed back for the reshoot, I planned which order we would be filming in.
Everything was set and ready for the Monday morning. At half 7 on the day of the shoot, I got a phone call from our Jordan Hamsey saying he could no longer make it as he had unfortunately been called into work as two other members of his team had gone sick. I had to think very quickly about how I could work around this and came up with a plan with the rest of my team as to how the day would now run.
I considered cancelling the reshoot because the weather was torrential rain, and a lot of the shots we needed to get were from the outside. However, it would have been too late to cancel, and in TV time is money, and therefore whatever we had shouldn't be wasted. We changed our shots to plan for being outside as little as possible and we attempted to get the best we could. We really needed to get a shot of Marie walking from her car to the front door, however because of the rain and the wind the shot unfortunately didn't work or fit with the rest of the scene. Nisserin had to go handheld to get the shot we needed as the wind kept de-stabalizing the tripod. Mecca held the umbrella over the camera and they got the best shot they could given the conditions.
As Jordan Hamsey wasn't there for the shoot, we couldn't do any more for scene 17, therefore we moved onto reshooting scene 11. We set up the baking equipment as before and made a clearer recipe for Dean's cookies as this highlights more how unpleasant they are. Over by the kettle where Annie would be standing is where we placed the Last Dish recipe book, adding more to the meaning behind what the Last Dish is. For this scene we only needed to get Annie's close up so we can see more of her face than her back, close ups of the ingredients being put into the mixing bowl, close ups of the cookie mixture being put onto a baking tray and two iPad inserts.
We managed to obtain these relatively quickly and easily as we knew what we wanted and how to achieve the best out of the shots. Overall we were happy with what we got for this reshoot.
As we still had the equipment until the following morning, I phoned our Jordan Hamsey and asked his availability for the 1st May. He agreed to come for his reshoot then and we were able to book out the kit until later in that day with Ferg.
We used the green screen with Jordan Hamsey to add an insert for the advert, we got him to pretend to sharpen some kitchen equipment and say a line "Hi I'm Jordan Hamsey here from the Last Dish, apply to my cooking show now". This will be added onto the TV when Annie is doing her yoga in scenes 6,7&8. By having this it adds more clarity into what the Last Dish is about and why Dean is impatient for his letter to arrive.
The weather was much clearer than the reshoot the day before so we were able to get Jordan Hamsey's close ups for scene 17 with no problems. As we didn't have the crew with the Last Dish t-shirts on, I pretended I was the sound operator and stood behind Jordan Hamsey and held the boom up in shot to keep the same atmosphere as if the crew were really there.
With all of the new shots added, other than Marie's, you wouldn't be able to tell that some parts are shot on different days, with the actors not being together.
We had one more iPad insert to add which we completed at uni. We created a short video of the instagram page that Annie posted the Jordan Hamsey footage on and put that onto the iPad. Nisserin then filmed me holding the iPad, capturing just the screen so that it worked for the scene.
Overall, our reshoot was a success but it could have been better had the weather not rained so hard when Marie was available for her reshoot. Unfortunately, we wouldn't have been able to get her back to reshoot her walking up the pathway because it was too close to the deadline and because of the other inserts we added, it wasn't necessarily needed. It would have been better to have it, however it doesn't affect the project with it not being there. On the advice of Simon, we chose to take the shot out. For this reason, we felt the project was still very strong and didn't lack any story telling moments.
