Production: Requesting Permission from Kent Film Office
As part of our shoot was outside on a public beach, I needed to request permission from the Kent Film Office to be able to grant my team permission to film there.
We wanted to film on Whitstable Beach as it is very picturesque and perfect for our location where Annie & Dean's house is set in the fictional seaside village of 'Farling Bay'. There were no actors required for this shoot as it was just scenery shots needed to set the location up within the edit, therefore gaining permission from the Kent Film Office wouldn't have been an issue.
In order to get the permission needed, I conducted a risk assessment and downloaded the University's public liability insurance and uploaded them to the application form online. As we are students I followed the procedures for a student filming permission request and waited for a response.
The Kent Film Office responded very quickly to my application but requested that I highlight in more detail where we would be filming as a lot of Whitstable beach is privately owned, making it a lot more difficult to gain permission. They sent across a map that highlighted was was owned by the local council and what was privately owned. I then liaised with Director Becca and chose to film along the council owned beach of Tankerton. We researched using google maps what this part of the beach looked like and decided it was perfect for what we wanted and could definitely add a lot to our sitcom's fictional location. I responded to the Kent Film Office with our decision and received permission within the next few days.
