Pre- Production: Draft 1 Script - Scene Breakdown

As Becca and I are co-writing the script for Young & Famous we began by deciding what each scene would entail for the pilot episode.  We broke down what the main summarising moments of the show are and then developed them further into scenes.

Main Summarising Points:

  1. Dean is awaiting approval for his application for a new cooking show
  2. Annie receives a new iPad to become Instagram Famous
  3. Betty is introduced along with Arnold the Robotic Cat
  4. Neighbour Claire tells her latest drama
  5. Dean doesn't get on the show
Moving on from these main points in the show, the scenes are roughly as follows:

Scene 1

Dean is pacing back and forth whilst Annie is doing Yoga around the house. There is a conversation between them about Dean's fitbit watch that Annie gave him and how he is not using it to it's full advantage. Dean isn't impressed as he is waiting for a delivery to arrive to say whether he has successfully made the live shows of a new and upcoming cooking show.

Scene 2

The doorbell goes and Dean answers to a delivery guy standing at the door.  He is excited to see him until the delivery guy expresses the parcel is for Annie not him.  Annie is excited to receive a brand new iPad and Dean grumpily tells her to 'grow up'.  The doorbell rings again and Dean imitates Annie's excited reaction. It's the same delivery guy only he forgot to get a signature for Annie's parcel to say it had been delivered.

Scene 3

Dean makes himself a coffee in the kitchen and Annie is excitedly playing with her new iPad. She tries to take a new picture on it for her Instagram profile and Betty pops into the frame.  Betty always has a mysterious way of entering the Davis' household and her visits are usually unexplainable. Betty always has a robotic cat with her called Arnold. She is in love with Dean and often shows this through her handmade gifts that she gives him every time she sees him. On this occasion it is a wooden spoon with a picture of her face printed onto the back. Dean is often keen to remove Betty from the house very promptly when she is around as she makes him nervous. Betty often leaves Arnold with him while she goes out shopping and Arnold usually ends up in the 'Betty Box' that Dean has in the hallway where her hand made presents get put.

Scene 4

Annie is sat at the table texting her grandaughter Violet asking how to use her iPad for Instagram. Violet replies with an emoji which confuses Annie and Dean. Dean is busy taping up the draws of the house to ensure no one can get in them.  Their Grandson Louis is coming over and he is often making art projects to sell with his black market dealer.  Louis often steals things from Annie & Dean to build these art projects and it's usually the things that Dean needs at a later date. Annie shows Dean a picture of the spaghetti bolognese he made the other evening and the pair reminisce about their first time eating the dish together. The clock on the mantle begins its usual off beat chime. Routine takes over and they shake and bash the clock with Betty's wooden spoon to resume normal chiming.

Scene 5

A crash is heard in the garden and they both rush out to see neighbour Claire crawling across the grass towards them. She pushes her way past them and into the living room. Dean gets his home baked biscuits out onto a plate and attempts to get Claire to try one. Claire is explaining over dramatically about how her Maid of Honour Ashley has created a 10 slide powerpoint on why she thinks they should have pink napkins for the wedding. Annie highlights to her that it is her wedding therefore she should decide what she wants.  Claire makes the decision to agree with Ashley. Dean is about to force feed Claire a biscuit when the doorbell goes off. Claire leaves as she thinks it will be Ashley looking for her and she climbs back over the fence.

Scene 6

Dean gets the door with his biscuits in hand to find the host of the cooking show standing at his door. He congratulates Dean on his application and takes a biscuit. Dean calls Annie who Instagram's the moment to the world. As the host is chewing the biscuit he takes back the letter of approval from Dean and coughs up the biscuit complaining about how awful it is. Annie is still filming the entire encounter.

What We Plan To Do

Now we have our scene breakdowns, we have decided who will write which scenes.

Becca will write scenes 1-3 and I will write scenes 4-6. Once we have completed our first draft we will then swap scenes and make amendments to each others scenes to ensure that there is a neutral writing style. The first draft will be in our Pre-Production Book.
