Pre-Production: Broadcasting Overview
Broadcasting Overview & Channel
‘Young & Famous’ would be broadcast on BBC 1 on a Monday night at 8pm, as it is a family friendly show and is therefore not needed to be broadcast after the watershed. BBC 1 often broadcasts British sitcoms such as Outnumbered, Mrs. Brown’s Boys and Terry and June, that are all hugely popular. As ‘Young & Famous’ is branded as a British sitcom it is best suited to this channel. These shows are usually aired on channels such as W and Gold once the series has been aired on BBC1.
The BBC stands for British Broadcasting Corporation, this is a public service broadcasting channel and is seen to be used to educate the viewers in a particular subject, as opposed to just entertain them. For this reason, the BBC doesn’t have any advertisement breaks as the Government and the television license funds them. This is something to take into consideration when deciding the duration of the pilot as well as making the script appropriate for broadcast on the BBC. The BBC first started in 1922, however BBC 1 was first introduced in 1936 where the first British Sitcom, Pinwright’s Progress, was aired and it ran from 1946 – 1947. Over time, the BBC has broadcast some incredibly well known sitcoms such as Dad’s Army, Blackadder and Fawlty Towers.
‘Young & Famous’ has taken inspiration from what the BBC has already successfully broadcast and also their ethos in educating audiences. ‘Young & Famous’ tackles the issues of loneliness and rejection from family members by highlighting how the older characters react to being told they are “ordinary”. By turning a storyline, such as this, into a Sitcom it allows audiences to be entertained, and as a variety of age ranges are presented on screen, the audience will relate to most of the characters.
