Studio Production: Workshop 2 with Del Brown

The day was split into two sections of masterclasses with Del.

We had a camera masterclass with Del on how to shoot live TV. It was important that we all had a go at this so that we could appreciate the challenges of this role.  

I learnt how to assemble the Jib with Becca which provided multiple challenges as we had many sections to put together and parts of it were not very stable.  This meant we had to work around these problems with the help of Ferg in order to have a full working jib arm. 

We then learnt how to keep framing and focus of a moving 'talent' and learnt the difficulties of keeping the focus tight.  This looked simple enough when watching someone else do it however when trying it myself I found it to be incredibly difficult.  By the end of this workshop I had got the hang of it but wouldn't go into camera work by choice in the future as I found it very challenging. 

We then learnt how to use the dolly effectively when tracking 'talent' across the set.  We tried it many ways however we decided it looked really smooth and effective when there were chairs in front of the lens.  This has ended up being one of our main shots for 'The Big Movie Quiz'. 

This workshop was really insightful and allowed everyone to appreciate the role and the responsibility of the camera operator which is really important to creating the show.

We then moved on to a vision mixing masterclass.  As this is my job role for the studio production I was very keen to get stuck in and learn what to do and how it worked.  

Del taught us how to cut to music which is something that happens more often that you'd think for live TV.  'Later with Jools Holland' is a show that has a large amount of vision mixing to a beat.  We learnt that every bar is 4 counts which means you are bar reading on the script what to mix and when.  

Once we had learnt the principles, we began to have a go on the desk, mixing to Anthony Cotton's Tap Dance routine.  I found this a lot of fun but very difficult which made me nervous about my role.  On the other hand it has also made me want to continue and practice this lots until I can get it perfect.  

We then tried mixing to a different genre of music which was just as challenging as I was listening to the beat tempo changing which made me lose my counts often.  After a few more attempts I managed to successful cut the first minute of the song which helped me to gain some confidence in what I could possibly be doing for a future job. 




I found both of these master classes an amazing learning curve and it has got me very excited about what we will have the opportunity to do throughout the course of this unit.
