Studio Production: Workshop 1 with Del Brown
Today we met Del Brown who is a Freelance Vision Mixer/Director and has been in the television industry for over 20 years. He has worked on and in some cases, still working on shows such as QVC, British Super Bikes Championships 2014, KSW Cage Fighting Championships 2015 and many more. He will be guiding us through everything practical on this course, helping us to create our live television show.
For our first meet with him, we have learnt lots of key industry terminology which will help us secure jobs in the future. Here is what we have learnt below that is really important for us to understand throughout this unit:
- MCR = Master Control Room
- TX = Transmittion
- Everything must be in 24 hour clock. For example; 22:00:28 ON AIR and 22:28:15 OFF AIR.
- Adverts = lots of money! They allow your program to run
- I.E.M = In Ear Monitor -> the Presenter can hear gallery talk back.
- COMMS = Communication via talk back.
- CCU = Camera Control Unit.
- Graphics/L3 = lower third or graphics.
- VT SOT = Sound on Tape.
- VT MOT = Music on Tape.
- Fold Back = Sending audio back to an external source.
- PIP = Picture in picture.
- REPO = Repositioning a camera.
- ME = Mixer Effects.
- Cross Shooting = avoids profile shots.
- Vision Mixer is silent: They listen to the director and have to be able to cut undirected.
- Floor Manager = Mics go live at -3' so must be silent. They are responsible for the studio floor, health and safety and making sure everyone is on comms.
- Greyscale Chart = What the cameras use to make sure their lighting is all the same.
- RAX = Vision Controller -> They control the iris of the cameras from the vision control room and are also responsible for making sure the greyscale chart is used properly.
Over the next few weeks up to our TX Day, Del will be working along side us through a series of Masterclasses and workshops to inspire us into job roles for Live Entertainment Television. I'm really looking forward to working closely alongside Del to learn how to vision mix.
