Studio Production: VT Rough Cut Edit
Myself and Rosie are the VT Editors for 'The Big Movie Quiz' and we have decided that Rosie will edit 'Norman's Mockumentary', I will edit 'Norman's Trailer' and we will both edit 'Trivia' together.
Editing 'Norman's Trailer'
When I first reviewed the footage for 'Norman's Trailer' I realised there wasn't a lot of coverage for the second half, that would help the pace of the film stay at a high level. Looking at the script and the shot list I was able to tell that the first section was a montage sequence.
I began by organising the footage into folders to make sequencing easier. It was difficult to edit it together effectively as the shot list was quite different to the footage I had so I was almost editing blind. I did my best to segment together the montage with what I believed to be in it and then added in some dramatic music to give an idea of what it could be like.
I then moved onto the second half of the trailer which was easier to edit together as it was simpler to follow the script. Again, it still provided some challenges as the pace dropped dramatically. It no longer felt like a trailer but more like a short film. This was really tricky to cut around as there wasn't any coverage to cut around it with.
Once I had sequenced together the entire trailer, I began to fine tweak the edits to make them as smooth as possible. Below is 'Norman's Trailer' as a rough cut.
The viewing with Helen went fairly well however she wasn't pleased with the pace of the trailer. The VT Team need to reshoot at least the second half because of the lack of coverage. I also need to edit with the director of the trailer as it will help me massively to sequence, as I will then have their input which is invaluable to making this work well. Helen did really like the montage sequence however I need to ensure that I make this tighter so that the pace is set from the very beginning.
'Trivia'
The 'Trivia' VT was really hard to edit as the shot list we were given didn't follow what we had footage wise at all. This meant we had to try and organise the footage into folders using the script and guessing largely where the directors wanted them. The majority of the shots were very long takes and there were no cutaways which meant we often had very obvious jump cuts. This was frustrating because the edit wasn't anywhere near as good as we wanted it to be, however we couldn't improve this without the coverage needed.
Our rough cut unfortunately wasn't exported as we continued to edit once we received feedback from Helen, therefore I cannot provide a clip on my blog. I can however show a mini segment of the trivia which caused us many problems when editing which was the finale of the VT.
As you can see from the clip above, the focus is soft and also once the talent moves to sit down, the camera doesn't re frame, leaving lots of head room. This was the only take we had where the talent fluidly ran through his lines, leaving us no choice but to use this in the edit.
After our meeting with Helen the VT Team have to reshoot the 'Trivia' VT because of the lack of coverage and the need for a quicker pace. In order to achieve this, they need to get tighter shots and cutaways that will allow us as editors to cut around the jump cuts and moreover improve the VT.
