Studio Production: Rehearsal Day 1 with Del Brown
Today was our first rehearsal in the studio for 'The Big Movie Quiz'. We was in Studio 5 rather than Studio 2 as there was a function on so this meant what we did in this rehearsal may be slightly different when we return to Studio 2.
To start, we had a meeting with Del in the Gallery of studio 5 to do a script read through and to highlight any format errors that needed to addressed. Fortunately, Josh and Becca had done a great job on the script and the only issue Del had was the colour coding. This was because in the industry, colour coding is not used because it can make it more confusing when they could just look at the script and see what camera is where. It may be distracting also and is not needed.
As there were no major changes to the script we were able to start blocking the show immediately, setting us in good stead for our rehearsals in the future.
While the crew were setting up cameras, Alex the tech person for the studios showed me how to create a split screen on the plasmas on the studio floor so that the crew could see whether the cameras looked the same colour. This was interesting and allowed me to start understanding just what the vision mixing desk can do.
Once we had blocked the first sequence of the show, we had a stop start run through with some stand in contestants, and I practiced vision mixing the shots that Becca was calling out. I found it particularly challenging when we got to the 'emoji' questions as I had to mix the emoji's onto the plasma within the set and then cut to it full screen. This was challenging because the emoji's had to be keyed into the plasma via a separate screen that I found hard to reach in Studio 5's Gallery as it was up quite high, as well as continuing to cut the show together.
I began to get to grips with the different M.E Buses on the Vision Mixing desk. At the top is M.E 2, in the middle is M.E 1 and the bottom is the Preview/Program Bus. It is the M.E 1 Bus that controls the on set plasma screen and I use the T-Bar to mix from 'The Big Movie Quiz' logo to the emoji graphics. I need to remember to mix the emoji back off the plasma screen and put 'The Big Movie Quiz' logo back on. This is going to take me a bit of practice to get used to as there are many things to think about and I need to be able to make smooth transitions, even if it is stressful in the gallery. Whatever goes out Live on TV, must appear seamless and calm.
Overall, we managed to block and cut the first 7 minutes of the show in the first rehearsal which is fantastic. I am really looking forward to blocking the rest of the show next week and practicing it all together.
