Studio Production: Rehearsal 2 with Del Brown

Today was our second rehearsal with Del for 'The Big Movie Quiz' and we were back in Studio 2 where the show will be performed. We set up a mock set which will remain in Studio 2 until the 5th April when the real set is going to be put up.

We began the rehearsal by blocking the last two rounds of the show with the cameras and ensuring we fixed any problems that may arise. I suggested a way to avoid complication for round 4 'The Box Office Line Up' which entails a tall board with doors that reveal how much a movie has made in the box office.  The problem that we had was when would the doors be closed once the round has finished without the second contestant seeing the answers.  I suggested the host closed the doors after he has revealed how much the movie has raised, to avoid trying to cut around seeing the floor manager on the floor closing the doors before the second contestant comes onto the studio floor to play their turn.  This seemed to work effectively and is something we are going with for the show.

We also had to ensure that 'American Pie In Your Face' worked as a round, particularly for the timings as there is a lot of setting up to do throughout the round by getting contestants kitted in apron and safety goggles, as well as ensuring the set is fitted with the games secured to the table tops.  At first we were practicing the game without using the cream.  We soon realised how important it was to practice with the cream because of the problems that arise from having it as part of the round.  We found it quite difficult to get the cream on the pie face games before we are back on air, so we tried rehearsing this by having our presenter put the cream on the game while he is explaining the rules.  This seemed to work well throughout the rehearsal and is what we are going with for the live recording.

In the gallery, we now have the chance to run through the show's entirety, running it to time.  This is the first chance we have had to actually know how long the show is running for and what we need to do after to improve it. I have written myself a guide for how to vision mix with all of the added extras needed for the show such as a split screen and the plasma in the set.

Vision Mixing Graphics

- Press DSK1 next to the T-Bar on P/P Bus to preview the graphic.
- When the Director says "Animate", mix the graphic onto the screen using the T-Bar on P/P Bus.
- When the Director says "Hide", mix the graphic off screen using the T-Bar.
- Press BKGD to remove the graphic from the preview screen.
- All the while DSK1 is active, you will not be able to see any of your other cameras in your preview screen.

Vision Mixing VTs

- If the Plasma is in shot on the programme screen, mix the VT onto the plasma by having the VT button previewed underneath the logo and mix on M.E 1 Bus using the T-Bar.
- Then cut the VT to full screen on the programme screen.
- Then reverse these actions to return to normal vision mixing.  It is important to put the logo back onto the plasma by mixing using the T-Bar on M.E 1 Bus.

Vision Mixing Emojis

- Press the FM1 or FM3 key onto preview mode in M.E 1 Bus and then mix this onto the plasma in the set.
- Press the FM1 or Fm3 key to programme mode in P/P Bus to see this full screen.
- Then cut a camera to air that allows you to see the plasma on set and mix the emoji off screen and back to the logo using the T-Bar in the M.E 1 Bus.

Split Screen

- On M.E 2 Bus select the two cameras you want in your split screen having one on preview and one on programme.
- Select 'wipe' next to your T-bar on M.E 2 Bus and double click it.
- In the touch screen computer attached to your desk, select the vertical wipe picture.
- Move the T-Bar on M.E 2 Bus half way and this controls where your split screen is.
- To add a border select 'border' and using the dials on the right hand side, you can change the thickness.
- To change the colour, select 'matte' and using the dials on the side change the luminance, saturation and hue until you achieve the colour you are happy with.

Next week will be our first rehearsal with our presenter George Sesay.  It will also be our last rehearsal before our dress and tech. I feel we have prepared well for our show and I am confident in what we are doing, I just need some more practice vision mixing to make the cuts smooth and quick.
