Studio Production: Further Research into Chosen Format
Our chosen format for 'The Big Movie Quiz' is quiz entertainment. There are many quiz shows across British Television and this format has been popular for many years and will continue to grow ever more.
So why is format so important to creating a TV Show? Richard Osman Co Creator of 'Pointless' says "You need a mechanic: a set of rules which create jeopardy and reward skill". Simply, this means that without having a guideline for you to create your show, your show may not have a clear format for you to follow or for your audience to follow. Having a format also helps you to reach out to a certain target audience. It is then up to you as a creator to choose what time you want the show broadcast. The later it is broadcast will determine what type of audience you are reaching out to. This will also help you to decide what style of show you are achieving as you need to appeal to your target audience.
'The Big Movie Quiz' had a target audience of 18-45 however as the show has developed, our producer Josh decided to lower this to 16-35 as he believed that the style and genre of the show suited this younger audience better. This impacted on the script and meant that the original format of the show adapted to suit this new target audience.
Originally the show had very adult themes as the inspiration behind it came from '8 out of 10 Cats'. However Josh took on feedback from everyone involved in the project and the script developed into something very different to the original. The majority of the adult themes were removed and replaced with more suitable jokes and gags for the audience and the time of broadcast on Channel 4. Also due to the nature of the quiz show, it was more appropriate to lose the majority of the adult themes and only have them linked to one character in particular - Norman.
As the show was inspired by '8 out of 10 Cats', I have researched into their format to compare how ours has developed and whether or not you can tell what the inspiration was.
'8 out of 10 Cats' is such a popular format that it has taken over the majority of Channel 4's commissioned shows. With many spin offs of the show doing many famous originals, the show has boomed in popularity and its format is repeated often. Due to the natural crudeness of the show, I don't think that 'The Big Movie Quiz's' format follows this show's any longer, given how much it has developed. 'The Big Movie Quiz' has become a much more family friendly show with hints of crudeness throughout the VTs.
In my opinion, I think this has made the show stronger because we are then able to reach out and appeal many different types of audiences, not just one specific kind.
