Studio Unit: Interview for your chosen roles

Before you go into an interview it is important to have prepared appropriately for the roles you are going for.  This means to research the roles you are applying for fully so that you can answer any questions the interview panel will have. 

Vision Mixer

To be a vision mixer you must be able to:

- Stay calm under pressure.
- Be focused and rarely lose concentration.
- Listen and respond to instruction.
- Use initiative to deal with unforeseen circumstances and undirected sequences. 
- Multitask.
- Be organised.
- Care about detail.
- Communicate strongly.
- Work well as part of team.
- Have a good sense of rhythm to make accurate and sensitive transitions. 
- Have lots of editing experience.

What is a Vision Mixer?

- Live editor for multi camera studios.  Usually works with Live and As Live productions. 
- They work closely with the director to visualise the show and achieve their vision.
- They listen to everyone in the Gallery including; Director, Producer, PA, GfX as well as being creative with the transitions. 
- They follow the running order closely & work from the script with the director to produce the best visual experience. 

Assistant Producer

To be an Assistant Producer you must be able to:

- Have great communication skills.
- Be organised.
- Stick to deadlines.
- Be calm under pressure.
- Assist senior staff members throughout all stages of production.
- Be directly accountable for the execution of a specific program brief, within editorial guidelines.
- Operate camera and sound equipment when required. 
- Ensure the style and mood of the program is always achieved.
- Think clearly and make effective judgements in unplanned circumstances. 

What is an Assistant Producer?

- Assists the Producer in realizing their vision.
- Delegate responsibilities onto other people and ensures they get done before or on the deadlines that are set. 
- On OB's they help with the shoot and ensure that everyone is on task and has everything the need. 
- Ensure that the style and tone of the program is reflected throughout everything being worked on. 


Production Assistant

To be a Production Assistant you must be able to:

- Count the show in and out of broadcast.
- Be quick when adding minutes and seconds.
- Be organised.
- Stay calm under pressure.
- Rework the timings for something unplanned.
- Communicate clearly. 
- Be one step ahead of the show's running order to keep it to time. 
- Rarely lose concentration.

What is a Production Assistant?

- Ensure the show is running to time.
- Follow the running order and calculate timings for each section.
- Communicate to everyone on the production how long everything is running for and how long they have until they are off air. 
- Liase closely with the director and the floor manager.

Interview Tips

- Take your CV in with you as it will make you look professional and you will be able to refer to it throughout the interview.
- Walk in confidently and and shake hands firmly.
- Smile, be polite and friendly.  This makes you more employable if you are easy to get along with and approachable.
- Be interested and ask them questions.
- Answer questions with examples.  It helps to take examples of your previous work with you. 

I have created a showreel of the work I am most proud of and I will take this into my interview with me. It is mainly based around things I have edited or produced as these are the two main roles I am interested in. I will do my best to focus all of my examples around why I would be suited to the vision mixer role, as this is my first choice. 

The Interview

The interview went very well.  I was interviewed by Helen, Laura and Julie over a 10 minute period.  I was asked many questions about why they thought I was suited to the role and how I would cope with unforeseen situations.  I tried to answer every question with an example and referred to my showreel and CV often.  As the interview was only short, we didn't get the chance to watch it however I made sure to describe what was on there when answering questions.  At the end they asked if I had any questions and I asked how they think they would benefit from having me as their Vision Mixer.  This was a useful question because it allowed me to gage how I had come across to them in the interview and also forced them to picture me as the Vision Mixer and what I would bring to the team.  They replied that they would feel confident having me as the Vision Mixer as I made them feel calm and relaxed about being in this role.  This is great because it will help me to prepare for future interviews.  I will definitely ask this question again.

At the end of the interview day, we were all given our roles based on how we performed in the interview.  I was very pleased to hear that I will be the Vision Mixer and VT Editor for the Studio show The Big Movie Quiz!
