Digital News - Studio Shoot

For our studio section of our episode, we wanted the lighting to be very clean looking and corporate as we are a Health channel. We were able to use lecture room 1 and set up an Arri light flooding the backdrop and two LED lights to light the presenter.

Our set up looked like this.

In regards to presenter, I had suggested on many occasions that we needed to hire outside of UCA in order to get a professional studio piece with someone who was confident in front of the camera and who would be willing to play the part. When the project first came about, Ellen had sorted us a journalist that she knew to be our presenter or reporter. Unfortunately due to a full time job he was unable to do it. We knew this 4 weeks into the project. I then suggested putting out an add on Casting Call Pro to get an actor in with presenting experience to perform for our studio section. The other members of my group weren't keen on this idea due to cost and practicalities and suggested that I presented. I was not 100% comfortable with this decision as I don't enjoy being in front of the camera, especially as in the brief it asks us to look outside of UCA.

On the shoot day I don't feel that I did the job justice like it could have been  done by a professional actor, despite being re assured by the other members of the group that it was fine. When we got the footage back from the shoot I felt that the shot size was too close, making it a bit of an uncomfortable viewing. Also as I am wearing an off the shoulder dress in our colour scheme of blue, the way the framing was made me look like I wasn't wearing clothing!

This was not the only problem we had. We decided to use just a zoom h14 recorder as so far throughout the project it has been a very reliable piece of kit that we have used in most of our edit. Unfortunately due to me holding it handheld to get the clearest sound possible, it obtained a very distracting rattling noise that meant the footage was unusable.

In hind sight, this is not necessarily a bad thing as it has given us the chance to take on board what we've learnt and re shoot to get the best we possibly can out of the facilities available to us. With the help of Fergus for both sound and lighting, we was able to reshoot and get better quality footage for the News Channel.

I changed what I was wearing to a pink jumper that also matches our colour scheme. This also made me feel a little more comfortable in front of the camera to perform. I did have a bit of a hard time reciting the script to camera as I felt it was very intimidating and a lot of pressure as this would be in our final piece. This is another reason I wanted to hire outside of UCA.

Here is our set up and the finished look on screen. (Excuse the grin)

The lighting was exactly the same as what we had for the previous studio shoot, so didn't take us too long to set it up. We somehow managed to get the background to look a little pinker than 'apple store' white. I think this was to do with our picture profile that was selected on the camera. However without having a picture profile we was unable to get the right skin tones for the presenter.

I personally think that the pink works quite nicely as it is very subtle and allows us to separate the presenter from the background. I also think it works nicely with our branding as the colour schemes are pink and blue.

I think that the framing for this studio shoot is much better as it isn't as close and leaves enough room to see body language and expression.

I personally found it very difficult to convert the right body language and expression needed for the studio presenter as I was distracted by reading the script. I did my best t try and learn all of the seen studio sections however this didn't go to plan, leaving me in a lot of frustration at not being able to get it right. I stand by my earlier reasoning of hiring an outside actor however I have to go with the unanimous group decision as we are a team. Next time I will definitely try to persuade the group to hire outside because of all the reasons above.

On the other hand, it may have caused us a hinderance to have hired outside due to us having to re shoot. This would have been more difficult to get the actor back at such short notice. I did try on my own to find some people who could be willing to come in and present but unfortunately due to the short notice, they were understandable unavailable.

Overall I think the re shoot went better than before in terms of sound and framing but I am disappointed that we couldn't get an actor in as I think it would have lifted the production values higher. I did the best I could with the presenting under the circumstances and I hope that it is good enough.
