Digital News - Shoot Day at Demelza

We went to Demelza Hospice at 10am to film at our third and final location. The staff there were incredible and helped us out a great deal in getting us the right people to interview. We interviewed Alex, who organised the application with Tesco to get their sensory garden the funds to build it through Tesco's scheme. We also interviewed Alison, the assistant gardener at Demelza who is going to be helping to build the sensory garden once it is in its renovation phase.

We interviewed Alex first and set up in the office similar to where she works. We decided to use a different office to what she actually works in because her office is incredibly noisy so would have caused us a few sound issues. In particular for the edit as the background noise would have made the cuts even more obvious. We used natural lighting from the window where we sat Alex, which gave us nice flattering lighting on the camera. We run through a few test shots first checking the exposure and framing to make sure that we could make the best of what we had in our surroundings.

I conducted the interviews and when Alex first answered, I realised that I had forgotten to ask her to answer with self contained answers. Once she had finished talking, I politely asked her if she would mind answering again in full sentences, reassuring her that her answer was perfect but for editing purposes we needed a self contained answer.

She was very nervous to be on camera and I did my best to reassure her that it isn't as scary as she thought and tried to make her more comfortable by asking her light hearted questions that she would be able to answer easily while we continued to do some checks for sound and framing. This seemed to work as she looked as though she had relaxed into the interview a little more. She still spoke her answers very quickly and made a lot of stop start sentences between ums and ars but we will be able to edit around this.

Learning from the Tesco shot, the eyeliner was looking up too high so I decided to conduct the interview sitting down so that I am on her level and I think this would have helped with her nerves as well, making it a lot less intimidating.

We then went outside to shoot in the garden with Alison who is the assistant gardener and will be helping to renovate the Sensory Garden. I conducted the interview in a similar way to Alex's however the difference being the completely different environment. This meant that we had to deal with issues such as plane noise, digger sounds and of course Wind. Wind was a big issue for us as it was a blustery day but the setting looked perfect for what we wanted. I brought the zoom's wind deflector out and applied this which helped to block out the wind considerable and also give a good clean vocal sound.

It wasn't until we got back to viewing the footage that we realised that her jumper in particular was very over exposed to compensate for the dull natural lighting. This will be something I will fix in post using colour correction and saturation to make the shot look more natural.

Overall the shoot day was a success and I am pleased with how we worked as a team to get the most out of the time we were able to have. We will need to send a cut of the edit to Demelza for approval to be able to submit the film and I'm positive all will be fine.
