Digital News - News Channel Comparisons

Our channel is aimed at news about health. I have researched into other news channels that deal with health as I wanted to take a look at what was already out there and how to make ours different to what the other already established channels have.

I looked at the BBC's news channel page and they have a health section. Their page looks like this:

They have a current theme of the 'world' in the background of their website which is making it clear to the viewer whose channel we are looking at. BBC only seem to have one story targeting health so there isn't really much I can take from here. I do think it would be a good idea to incorporate our logo in the background like BBC has here, if it suits our website once the designs are finalised.

I also took a look at the NHS's news page for Health:

This news page is strictly about health and symptoms on what to look for if you have a health concern. It looks like it is more of an advice giving page as opposed to one that tells personal stories. The stories you can see under "Behind the headlines" are more informative about the specific stories and perhaps are there to eliminate any stigmas about health related issues. I like the layout of this page because its very clear as to where to look for specific questions. For example, the search bar at the top has specific tabs that allow you to easily navigate the page.

Finally, I took a look at a health page called Univadis:

This page is very different to those above because you can actually sign in and have your own personal account. It highlights recommended stories that would appear to be something similar to 'top stories' for that week. It covers a wide range of health topics which are clearly labelled down the left hand side. For those who are't very 'technology friendly', this is a very clever way of ensuring that all technology users navigating the page are able to access the information required. I think this is a very good way of making sure that their target audience is not restricted by the layout of the website.

I think our website holds something more unique than these websites because it is about personal stories to health and health charities about good things happening to them. It is a sound board for people who have suffered with health to inform people of what their donations and funding has done to help them. Whether it be through our package story of Tesco bags of help scheme helping fund Demelza's project or Groundwork supporting mental health charity Kent Sheds. Our website gives a different sort of news programme which I think is very different to what people may be used to when thinking of 'health news'.
