Digital News - Building our Website
We started to create our website online through "Wix". We discussed as a group the layout of the website and what we all thought should go in it.
Wix is an online platform that allows anyone to create their own online website for free, choosing from a variety of designs that give you the creator the freedom to make your website bespoke and appropriate for its purpose.
With our website, we have designed it so that the logo "Health Heroes" will be placed at the top of the page and will appear on every page. We will then have a navigation bar underneath the logo in alternate colours that match our colour scheme. Underneath this, we have an introduction to the website explaining what we aim the website to do and what it's theme is. On the right hand side we chose to make a bordered box that will hold all of our separate articles as links so that we can fill the website up with more health news related stories.
Once we started filling in the website, we felt that the logo's colour scheme was slightly too childish looking for our actual branding idea. Although it fits very well with our story on Demelza as its aimed at children, it won't look as professional for the other stories we are covering that aren't children orientated. We decided to keep the idea of pinks and blues but make them darker. Once we did this we saw a huge difference in the aesthetics of the website as it instantly gave a different atmosphere to the page. Obviously we don't want the website to be too formal as after all, we are presenting the viewers with good news about donations and we are appealing to all age groups therefore it still needed to be 'fun'. We worked out that by playing around with the font styles we could have all the important information in a font called "Nimbus Sans" which created the professional look we were after. We then chose a more relaxed, fun font for the headings called "Scary Title". We thought this worked really well with the website and was coming together with the right atmosphere. We found we couldn't decide on the right font for the logo as nothing screamed at us as 'the one'. We would ideally like something in between serious and fun so that it will really highlight our brand well when first opening the homepage.
With the articles we decided that we will each write one for the page and then peer assess as a group each others work to ensure that the style is written similarly and that the content is definitely focused on the brand and target audience. I think this is a great idea as we will all have each others support for our individual articles. I am going to write the article for our main package and then possibly write another separate article to help bulk out the website.
We came up with the idea of having animated health connotations falling down the side bars of the website in our colour scheme. For example, hearts, stethoscope, plasters and first aid crosses would be mixed together in a mosaic and gently fall down the page to lift the atmosphere and professionalism of the page. I think it will really add to the website and make it niché. We spoke to Ferg about the best way to go about animating it and he though we may struggle as it depends on how far Wix will let us go with it. He suggested making a composition in After Effects however he pointed out that After Effects would want to export a movie and Wix may not accept that. He suggested possibly trying a "flash" as it may be more compatible. If neither of those work, we may have to settle for a still image and have that instead for the side bard. I think it would still give the same effect, it just wouldn't look as fun. This is definitely food for thought and something to play around with to see what works best.
Here is what our website started to look like and I'm excited to continue working on it!
