Werner Herzog: Grizzly Man
Grizzly Man is about a man named timothy Treadwell who died by being eaten by a bear. Every year for 5 years he went out to where the bears lived and filmed them. When he came back to America, he would spend his time going to different local schools and teach them about the bears and why it is important to protect them and their sanctuary. Herzog obtained all of Treadwell's footage which was over 100 hours long and sifted through and chose just under 75 minutes long to create a narrative. It is said that this is one of the most objective documentaries ever made however it could be argued that because of the fact 100 hours of Treadwell's footage has been adapted to tell a story that it is equally as subjective as a film such as Michael Moore's "Bowling for Columbine". Herzog allows the audience to make their own opinions of the footage being shown by allowing Timothy to say his part before expressing his own.
Treadwell acts as a presenter and drives the story forward however there is a bit of manipulation from Herzog's narration that help to steer the audiences journey through the film. There are lots of bright colours and some beautiful moments where when filming the bears, the audience is able to fully appreciate the power in which these bears have aiding the storyline and giving many underlying meaning to which the story is also about. When we create our piece, I want to be able to capture similar moments with the birds to what Treadwell and Herzog have created in Grizzly Man. The vibrant colours will lift the mood and tone of the piece and cause the audience to care about the birds more and hopefully change people's perceptions of what a vulture truly can do.
