Shoot Day 1

On the 13th of April we started shooting our documentary at Doddington Place Gardens, Sittingbourne. The day started out very well, the weather was beautiful and sunny which made the gardens look stunning. We began by getting general cutaways of the gardens while we waited for Jo, our interviewee and Darren, our presenter. Ellie, Ellen and Josh was on camera and I briefed Darren on what it was that was expected of him and made sure that he was happy and comfortable with what he was to be doing. We began by having an introduction to Darren by getting him to walk into the gardens introducing the location and what he is going to be doing there.

We were able to shoot in the gardens for an hour but unfortunately the weather turned badly very quickly and we encountered a huge hail and thunderstorm that meant we could not conduct the interview with Jo outside. We changed our plan and worked with what location we had left which was to film inside the Hawking Centre where all of the birds are housed. There were many problems that crept up with this location as birds really aren't the quietest animals so we have a lot of very loud and intrusive squarks and screeches throughout the interview with Jo. We had Jo on a clip mic but because the mics are so sensitive there was no way of getting around the birds noises. Hopefully we will be able to turn them down in post.

The weather soon picked back up into sunshine so we were able to conduct the interview with Julie outside in the Falconers outside sanctuary which provided lovely bright colours and a relaxing atmosphere on screen. Julie was holding Morticia, a vulture that features a lot in our film, she made filming very fun as she provided character and a point of interest for the spectator to look at which will mean that when we come to edit, we may not have to have as many cutaways to keep the audience entertained as it is a very interactive interview. I think the microphone may have been too close to Julie as the sound kept peaking at times and she also found herself filing with the wire of the microphone which caused some more static noise. This may have been because she was nervous but we hadn't noticed what was wrong until the edit stage. We checked the levels on the camera several times throughout the interview and the sound was at the correct stages. Sound is definitely something I feel I would definitely like more help with, in particular location sound.

Overall the day was a success as we got many cutaways and GV's, plus all of the interview footage we wanted. The only thing we didn't get was an introduction to Jo and the birds flying due to the weather restrictions. I will arrange with Jo to go back another day to film again the bits we had missed out on.
