Eden Channel Research

Eden, is a UKTV channel which is a platform for wildlife, science and adventure shows. It often sees the likes of David Attenborough and Brian Cox as they showcase to viewers the wonders within Natural History and Science Programming. Eden can be located on Sky channel 532 and Virgin  channel 203.

Eden has been around since 2004 where it was originally called UKTV Documentary where they mainly broadcast documentaries from the BBC archive. They rebranded the channels name to Eden in 2009 and launched a new theme of documentary focused mainly of the natural environment instead of all types of factual programming.

We will be focusing on creating a channel for Eden to be screened at 8pm called "Doorstep Wilderness". Taking a look at the types of shows that Eden currently show, it is important that as a group we maintain the same theme and do stray too far from what they have. This doesn't mean that we can not be creative and surprising, we just have to make sure that what we create is not only original but in keeping with their genre.

Currently, Eden has 4 main categories within the "nature" section. These are Animals, Plants, Earth and Green. I would like to make a programme focusing on animals as I find that they can be really interesting on camera and provide more of a visual aid to information. It would be great to attempt to include all four of Eden's categories into our 10 minute short however it must be relevant to the story that are telling. There has to be a reason as to WHY we are showing the audience what they are seeing.

Eden's audience mainly concludes of nature and science lovers however many people enjoy watching the channel for its surprising revelations and intriguing information about the world in which we live. It's main viewers are of the more mature ages therefore we need to make sure that when we are creating the preparations and script for the film that we make sure it is informative in a mature but non-patronizing manner so that we keep the audience interested and not offended. If we made the show too informal, it would be considered more for children to be viewing, where as we know the show will be broadcast at 8pm therefore it is definitely more aimed at adults who wish to learn more about the wilderness.

Looking on the website, they have many "How to guides" on creating documentaries. I have looked at one about filming Sea Birds. I am quite interested in an idea involving birds so this was very useful in information on how to film them. Some advice given is to not spook them, attempt to film them in their natural behavioural state. A way of doing this is to shield yourself from maybe your car or some other form of camouflage. By doing this, we would be able to obtain the most realistic representation of the birds in their habitat.
