Steve Finn - Deep Reading of a Script

After having a workshop with Steve Finn, we were shown how to deep read a script and get as much information out of it as we can to help us plan a shoot. He gave us mini scenes to read and prepare to shoot for another workshop. I was given 'A&E' which is about a young doctor who stole some drugs from a controlled drugs cupboard. The doctor above him is trying to persuade him to sort out his problem or she will. He ends up proposing a big problem for the character which is that she was the one who gave him the key which means that she could be fired for his offence.

Steve taught us to read the script and make choices as to what each character's personality was and who they are as people.

Then we had to decide on what their goal was for that scene and why there goal was obstructed or changed.

Here, Sally's goal was to get Dez to admit what he had done and change his habit. This was obstructed because Dez knows that she could be fired for giving him the key to the cupboard. Sally clearly cares a lot about her job and therefore this makes a problem for her.

After we have established their goals, we hd to make a floor plan to  help the Director of Photography and the crew understand where the camera positions would be alon with what shots were to be taken. It also allows the director to establish what the scene will entail in terms of set design, props and character movement also.

You can see my notes below:

When we went into filming for this workshop, I found it challenging to be confident in directing people where to go and how I would like the camera to be placed. I found it helpful having the floor and camera plans as it enabled me to test what worked and what didn't fairly quickly. When I come to film my own pieces, I will definitely ask my crew to be at the location at least an hour before my actors so that I can discuss my shots with them so that I know we will have a complete understanding of what I want the project to look like and it will maintain a level of professionalism for the actors so that they are comfortable with what they are doing without being unnerved as to whether myself and my crew are completely certain of what we are doing.

I have learnt a lot from the sessions with Steve Finn as he has taught me to have confidence in my ideas as well as how to put them onto paper that will make sense for both myself and my crew which is something I struggled with last term.

Here is a snippet of what I created in the workshop:
