TV Drama Series Presentation - Secret Smile
I have chosen to direct a version of the 2015 British drama "Secret Smile" staring David Tennant and Kate Ashfield, directed by Christopher Menaul.
This was a 2 part drama series on ITV between December 12- December 13 2005. It has recently been re aired on ITV which is how I found out about it.
This series is about two characters who meet and end up having a one night stand. The male character Brendan becomes attached and when the female Miranda breaks it off between them he begins to pursue her. He ends up dating her sister and proposes 5 weeks into the relationship. When the wedding day comes, Brendan breaks it off and marries Miranda's best friend. A murder trial later takes place when Miranda's blood is found in a bath tub.
I chose to do this particular series because I think it is a very interesting psychoanalysis of a character and I think that it will be a lot of fun to find a different way to tell the story. I'm thinking of telling the story via a different character's perspective to give a different effect to the one the original series gives to an audience.
Ive discovered that the director Christopher Menaul has used a lot of extreme close ups, in particular conversations between Brendan and Miranda. This is effective because it makes the audience uncomfortable and suffocated, reflecting how Miranda feels by him. I'd like to show the point of view from Brendan's side because i think it will create more of an interesting twist for the audience.
I don't yet have my chosen scenes for my directional take because the series has an awful lot of dialogue. I need to source important and significant story telling moments in the series that I think I will be able to realistically re create and re direct to make them my own. I have a few scenes in my head, however I need to work out how I will tell them in a sequence that will create an effect on the audience.
Here is a trailer for Secret Smile.
