Screenwriting Research
I have researched into Millard Kaufman's book, "Plots and Characters: A Screenwriter on Screenwriting". I have found a few great quotes that sum up screenwriting in a clever and realistic way. I like these quotes because they aren't sugar coating the life of a screenwriter. Some of the quotes consist of:
This for me says how everyone who reads your script will interpret it in their own creative way. Everyone has their own vision which might not necessarily be the same as the writers.
I think that this quote is about how no one can ever be fully satisfied with their own product. Where it says "if it is too perfect it probably stinks", it could possibly mean that there isn't enough conflictual events throughout to make the story entertaining for the audience. From this I have learnt that every audience thrives on a conflict or in the misery of others and therefore when writing my next script, I shall aim to create numerous amounts of conflict to give my characters the depth that the audience needs in order to be entertained and involved.
From this quote I have learnt that it's okay to make mistakes. It's a natural process. It's better to admit to yourself that whatever it is isn't working and move onto a new project. It doesn't mean that you are a bad writer, it just means that that particular script isn't a successful one. I will definitely keep this in mind when I am writing scripts in the future because then I won't dwell on a story that I am not completely happy with or think is potentially one that is going to provide the best story.
Reading this quote has helped me to understand that it is important to get audience feedback on my work and to take on board their feedback to gain a better understanding of what they think of my script. For example, our script feedback with Steve Coombes. He gave me some great feedback and helped me to understand what worked within my script from a perspective of someone who had never seen it. I have learnt that the audience is definitely the most important component in making your script work as you are always thinking about how they will interpret it and how informative it is without giving too much away. It is important to allow your audience their intelligence when watching your film and the screenplay must allow this to happen. "Show don't tell".
This for me says how everyone who reads your script will interpret it in their own creative way. Everyone has their own vision which might not necessarily be the same as the writers.

I feel that these quotes are relevant because when I am writing my own script because it has helped me to understand that all scripts aren't going to be perfect and that development is a key part to writing a story.
