58 year old Tony Jordan has been a professional screenwriter since the age of 32 and has had many years of experience in script writing about ordinary people (BBC - Wales, Tony Jordan).

During his career as a screenwriter, Jordan has produced many scripts for the soap opera Eastenders which resulted in him becoming the lead writer and series consultant which spanned a total of 18 years.

Following this, Jordan set up his own production company (Red Planet Pictures, 2006) which successfully commissioned TV shows such as Casualty and Holby City.

The Passing Bells
Joanna and Tommy
Jordan is mainly a soap opera writer however he has written dramas such as The Passing Bells which I have found very helpful towards my own project. The Passing Bells provides a similarity to my characters Jimmy and Evangeline. In this show, Joanna and Tommy have a blossoming romance throughout the war which relates what happens between my two characters, although the storyline and outcome is different.

The Mitchels
Eastenders
It is valid that he has written soap operas in terms of aiding my learning with screenwriting this project because soap operas require writing about ordinary people. Through looking at his work both scripted and televised I have begun to understand how to portray ordinary characters through writing to make them realistic for an audience. Eastenders is a fairly good example for me to look at because although they are presented as ordinary people, they always have a drama occurring in every episode which keeps the audience entertained when watching them. It is this drama that has allowed me to find the balance between not making my project melodramatic/over the top and making it a subtle character study which is what I aim to make.

Reading the first few pages of The Passing Bells has enlightened me as to how quickly and clearly the character's personalities are presented through the script. Whilst you are reading, you are able to form a picture in your head of the possible character profiles which is something I would really like to explore further with my script. I am going to experiment with this when doing my re write which I think will help people to understand my characters more and highlight the film as a character study more than a drama.

  1. hi laura - there is some good work going on in your journal. getting a good sense of your learning through the unit. make sure you are covering all the requirements of research in evidence and we see how this affects your work. This entry is good one. don't forget short film reviews, drama series and other screenwriters, plus something on the art of screenwriting in general. - also make sure you evidence your prep for your shoot - shot lists, storyboards etc - anything that shows me how you approached your filming.
    good work so far!
