Crafting Short Screenplays
That Connect

“A Screenwriters purpose is to connect.” Johnson, C.H

Questions?
-    Who are we connecting with?
-    Why is it important to connect?

Answers
-   Trying to connect with the audience and themselves as writers and to what drama is.

“People-to-people medium. Not camera-to-people, directors-to-people, writers-to-people but people-to-people.” Franc Capra

What does this mean?
-    It means it is important to connect your audience through making it realistic/believable.
-    The story must have some sort of personal connection to each audience member.

How is this relevant to my screenplay idea?
-    The idea of making a story connect with the audience on a personal level means that I need to ensure that I develop my characters to have realistic reactions to their surroundings. For example; when Jimmy dies in the screenplay, Rylee needs to react in a way that is representative of his character and the story he is telling. If he reacts in a way that is different to how the audience might expect it could add emotive and dramatic impacts as the audience have watched his character and personality grow.

The book really stresses the importance of connecting with everyone involved in the making, producing and watching of the story unfold. From this I will ensure that in both my writing and re-writing stage that I am constantly connecting my characters to the audience to make them sympathise with the characters and feel the dramatic impacts in the moments I will incorporate into the screenplay when I come to write it.
