Editing Workshops with Fergus
Fergus introduced us to the editing software Premiere Pro CC and gave us the ropes to start experimenting how to edit footage. In the beginning he taught us how to set up our keyboard and mouse to allow us to use shortcuts.
At the start, I found I was not confident using the software at all and constantly needed to check with the people around me that I was on the right step. Sammi gave me the advice to write down notes as Ferg tells us what to do so that I can remember how to do it and feel more confident. I have to say that this was fantastic advice because it made life so much easier! I have typed up all the notes into word and organised them in terms of structure which has helped a tremendous deal as when I come to edit my project I can look back on these notes to check I am working along the right lines.
One thing I found I struggled with the most when editing something together from a camera workshop was getting the frame size to fit in the timeline. I realised after editing it together that the method I was using to move my first clip to my timeline was wrong. Instead of pressing the insert/overwrite button, I needed to click and drag the clip into the timeline for it then to give me the option to change the clip's frame size. I am now much clearer on this aspect of Premiere and have adapted my typed notes to make sure I know how to do this when I come to edit my project.
In our next session of learning how to edit, Ferg taught us a shortcut on how to organise our footage into "bins". This tool I found particularly useful because it enabled me to feel much more organised and saved me a lot of time trying to sift through all the clips and add them to the timeline. It also gave me the opportunity to become familiar with the clips by watching them through briefly in order to organise them into their bins. Bins are definitely something I will be using when I edit my project as they will help me to organise the clips and use my editing time more efficiently and productively.
Overall, I feel that I am becoming more and more confident when using Premiere Pro CC and will continue to enjoy learning the new aspects of editing. I am very keen to start making and editing my own project!
