Memento Review

When watching Memento (Christopher Nolan 2000) it is not apparent at first how simple the storyline is. This is because Nolan has portrayed the story through a complex plot line creating drama and giving the spectator a thrilling watch.

A Critical Review from metacritic.com

I agree with the message that this critical review is giving because it relates a lot of my first impression when watching the film. My original thoughts of the theme of Memento was that it was almost like a murder mystery. The audience is as much the detective as the protagonist Leonard (Guy Pearce). At times I found the film very confusing to follow when the plot line took the audience through flash backs and repeating scenes before moving on to the next part of the story. This is definitely a plot that needs a lot of audience attention and concentration, however upon further studying, the storyline is not as complex as it is told.

Although I understand Nolan's method of directing his plot to be told backwards, my work won't be influenced by this because i feel that my story is able to tell itself with enough interest for the audience to not necessarily guess everything that will happen in the story.

Here is the trailer to Memento giving a rough outline of the complexity to both the characters and the plot line of this feature film.

  1. interesting thoughts - anything about the way memento was made that will affect your own writing? Always try and make sure your research work has impact on your own work - even it if its as simple as saying, this is not how i will tell my story etc. good work still.
